Does the Alesis Nitro Max work with iQuantize?

Yes. The Nitro Max is the kit iQuantize's default pad map was built and measured against, so it is recognized and mapped the moment you plug it in.

- Pad mapping
- Recognized as an Alesis module and mapped automatically on the Alesis pad layout. Any pad can be reassigned in the Pad MIDI Mapper.
- Hi-hat
- Open, closed and pedal hi-hat arrive as separate MIDI notes. Half-open and splash articulations are folded onto the nearest of open or closed. The Nitro Max pedal is continuous hardware but transmits discrete notes only, so open, half-open, closed, chick and splash all resolve correctly without any controller setup.

How to connect it
About two minutes, once. Whatever the cable, it must be a data cable. A charge-only USB cable fits the socket and passes no MIDI, which is the single most common reason a kit never appears.
- Power the Alesis Nitro Max on and find its USB port — USB-B (square “TO HOST” / “USB COMPUTER” socket).
- On a Mac, iPhone 15 or later, or a USB-C iPad: connect a USB-B to USB-C data cable straight from the module to the device.
- On an iPad with a Lightning port: use a genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter, plug a charger into its Lightning power port, then connect the module. Why this is required.
- Open iQuantize. The module is picked up automatically — no pairing, no settings to change.
- Play a few pads to confirm each one lands on the right drum. If one is off, fix it in Settings → MIDI → Pad MIDI Mapper.
- Pick a groove and play a take. You get a verdict, what slipped, and one thing to do next.

iQuantize scores every take against the chart, tells you what slipped, and picks the next groove for your level.

Checking and fixing the pad mapping
Recognized as an Alesis module and mapped automatically on the Alesis pad layout. Any pad can be reassigned in the Pad MIDI Mapper.
To check it, open Settings → MIDI → Pad MIDI Mapper and hit each pad. The mapper shows the incoming note and which drum it is currently driving. To change one, select the drum on screen first, then hit the physical pad that should play it, and save.
The mapping is stored for this module specifically, so it is restored automatically the next time you connect. A change you make yourself is never overwritten by automatic detection.
Known quirks on this module
- The half-open hi-hat note is mapped deliberately — an earlier version that ignored it dropped strikes and scored open-and-closed grooves far lower than closed-only ones. Nothing to configure; it is handled.
- On an iPad with a Lightning port the module needs more power than the port supplies. Use the genuine powered Apple adapter.
Common questions
Does the Alesis Nitro Max need any driver or app-side setup?
No. It is class-compliant over USB-MIDI, so your iPhone, iPad or Mac sees it as soon as it is plugged in with a data cable and powered on. There is no driver to install and no pairing step.
Can I hear the module's own sounds while using iQuantize?
Yes, and it is the lowest-latency option. Monitor your playing through the module's headphone output while the app plays the chart through your device. iQuantize scores the MIDI either way.
What if a pad lands on the wrong drum?
Open Settings → MIDI → Pad MIDI Mapper, select the drum you want on screen, then hit the physical pad. Save. Your change is stored for this module and is never overwritten by automatic detection.
