Every corner of drumming has its own shorthand — the words a teacher uses in a lesson, the words a method book assumes you have, the words a drum module’s manual never explains. This page collects the ones you are most likely to meet, defined the way we use them.
Several mean slightly different things in different rooms, and the difference is rarely academic: it decides what a player is sent away to practise. Tell a student their dynamic range is narrow and they go and work on the gap between soft and loud; tell them their dynamic control is loose and they go and work on one repeated target. Where the word changes the assignment, the entry says so.
Entries are grouped by category rather than alphabetically, and linked to a fuller guide wherever one exists.
Timing
- Rushing
Playing consistently ahead of the tempo, so hits land early against the grid rather than on it. It arrives across a phrase rather than as one wrong note, which is why the first sign is usually a fill that finishes early. Telling rushing from dragging.
- Dragging
Playing consistently behind the tempo, the mirror image of rushing. The same measurement covers dragging and sitting deliberately back in the beat; what separates them is consistency. A steady 15 ms behind is a choice, a wandering 15 ms behind is a fault.
- The pocket
The relationship between timing, dynamics and note length that makes a groove feel settled rather than merely correct. Nothing measures the pocket directly; what can be measured are its ingredients, and a take can be clean on all of them and still not settle.
- The grid
The regular subdivision a chart’s notes are written against: quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth-note triplets. Each hit is judged against where the grid says it belongs, never against the hits around it, so a take can be perfectly even and late in every bar.
- Subdivision
The smallest regular slice a bar is divided into, such as eighths or sixteenths. Tolerance moves with the notes: on a dense passage the accurate band narrows to a quarter of the gap between neighbouring hits on the same drum, so a player solid in eighths falls apart in a sixteenth-note fill.
- Tempo vs feel
Tempo is a single number, beats per minute. Feel is everything a player does inside it: where each hit sits against the beat, how dynamics shape a phrase. Tempo is the only one you can set from a menu, which is why it gets the attention and repays the least.
- Click / metronome
An even reference pulse to play against. Playing to a click is more reactive than it feels — you can ride a strong pulse for three minutes without ever running the time yourself — which is why it proves less than a click that stops. Getting more from metronome practice.
- Count-in
The bar of clicks before playing starts, setting the tempo and marking where beat one falls. It is load-bearing for measurement too: without a clean count-in there is no trustworthy reference for beat one, and timing goes unreported rather than reported badly.
- Internal pulse
Holding a steady tempo with no click running. It is judged only across a section where the click actually drops out and needs at least two complete bars of silence, so playing beautifully with the click on tells it nothing. Building a stronger internal pulse.
- Timing stability
How tightly a player’s hits cluster around their own average, whether that average sits early or late. A consistent offset inside the accurate band costs almost nothing on timing to the click, while scatter shifts stability about three times faster. How timing stability is measured.
- Swing / shuffle feel
A feel where the off-beat subdivision is delayed rather than falling exactly halfway, giving straight eighths a lilting shape. How much delay counts as “swung” is style, not a fixed ratio — but swinging over a chart written straight reads as a page of late off-beats.
Dynamics
- Ghost note
A deliberately quiet note, usually on the snare, played at a fraction of the volume around it. The common fault is not playing them too quietly but playing them at the same weight as everything else, at which point they have become sixteenths. How to make ghost notes consistent.
- Accent
A note played deliberately louder than its neighbours to mark a beat or a phrase. An accent is made by the gap, not by absolute volume, which is why playing a whole bar harder produces no accents at all.
- Dynamic range
How much real contrast exists between a player’s softest and loudest notes. Range and dynamic control are different assignments: range asks how far apart your extremes are, control asks whether each note landed in the band the chart asked for. Widening your dynamic range.
- Velocity
The value a drum module reports with every struck note, from 1 to 127. It describes what the module decided about the strike, not its physical loudness: change the sensitivity curve and the same stroke reports a different number. How velocity feeds into scoring.
- Velocity zone
One of three bands the accepted velocity range is split into — ghost, normal, accent — so a number from the module becomes a musical intention. The boundaries are yours: ghost at 45 and below, accent at 110 and up.
Say “zone” to a student when the job is landing in the right band, “range” when it is widening the gap: one drill is a repeated single stroke, the other is soft and loud in one bar.
- Rimshot
A snare stroke that strikes head and rim together, producing a sharper crack than a normal hit. On most modules it arrives as its own note rather than as a loud head hit, so a very hard head stroke will not satisfy a chart that asks for one.
- Cross-stick
A snare technique where the tip of the stick rests on the head while the shaft strikes the rim: a dry knock with no ring, nearer to a woodblock than to a snare. It is not a quiet snare hit and cannot stand in for one.
Technique and coordination
- Flam
Two strokes played almost together, one hand a fraction ahead of the other, so a soft grace note lands just before the main note. The gap widens on its own as the volume goes up, because the two hands start from different heights and only one was being watched.
- Drag / ruff
A rudiment where two quiet grace notes — three when it is called a ruff — are bounced just before a main, accented note. They have to fit before that note without moving it; a drag that pushes its own accent late is a timing problem, not an ornament.
- Buzz roll
A sustained roll built from multiple-bounce strokes rather than distinct singles, heard as a continuous wash. Squeezing harder shortens each buzz and turns the wash into a stutter, so a clean roll is a grip problem before a speed problem. Relaxing the grip for a cleaner roll.
- Double stroke
Two notes played from a single stroke motion of one hand. The second note of each pair is almost always both quieter and later than the first, so a weak double stroke shows up as a dynamics fault before a timing one.
- Single stroke
One note per stroke, alternating hands: the simplest and most common sticking. Alternating also hides the weaker hand, since each one plays only every other note — page 5 of Stick Control exists to stop it hiding.
- Paradiddle
A rudiment combining single and double strokes in the pattern right-left-right-right, and its mirror. The doubled stroke flips which hand leads each time round, so an accent on the first note moves to the other hand without you thinking about it.
- Rudiment
A named, standardised sticking pattern — a paradiddle, a flam, a roll — recurring across method books and charts. It is vocabulary rather than an exercise: the payoff is recognising the shape inside a fill you have never seen. Practising slow to earn speed later.
- Limb independence
Keeping separate limbs on different, sometimes conflicting parts at once without one dragging the others off. It is only scored on charts that demand hand-and-foot coordination — a hands-only groove never exercises it, and never pretends to. Building limb independence deliberately.
- Ostinato
A repeating pattern, usually in the feet or one hand, continuing underneath whatever else happens on the kit. The test is not whether you can play it but whether it stays evenly spaced while the other limb changes.
Notation and charts
- Groove
A repeating pattern that forms the main feel of a section, as distinct from a fill. Because it repeats, it carries its own diagnostic question: does bar 8 still match bar 1. Playing grooves along with real songs.
- Fill
A short break from the groove, usually at the end of a phrase, signalling a transition. Fills are where most takes lose their notes, and in a predictable direction: a bar that rushes into the fill is far more common than one that drags into it.
- Bar
A fixed span of beats marked off by the time signature, also called a measure. It is the address feedback is written to: findings name bar numbers rather than seconds, so “bars 5–6” is the smallest thing anyone can be sent away to practise.
- Beat
The basic pulse a bar is divided into, and the unit tempo is counted in. Nothing is judged at beat resolution, though: what gets measured is the millisecond distance between your hit and where the beat fell.
- Time signature
The figure at the start of a chart stating how many beats are in a bar and which note value counts as one: 4/4, 6/8, 5/4. It also decides where the click lands, which is why 6/8 counted in two feels like different music from 6/8 counted in six.
- Notation
The written system of noteheads, stems and symbols used to put a drum part on a staff. Fluency is not knowing the symbols; it is being far enough ahead of your hands to see a phrase coming. Learning to read drum notation.
- Chart
The specific written piece being worked from: notation, structure and any authored dynamics. Grading is against the chart as written, accents and ghost notes included, so a take can be musically defensible and still marked down for something the page did not ask for.
- Playhead
The moving marker showing the current position in a chart during playback or a take. It is a useful reference and a bad habit: eyes on the playhead read exactly as fast as the music arrives, a beat too late to prepare anything.
- Sight-reading
Playing a chart correctly the first time it is seen. It depends on scanning ahead of where the hands are, so it only improves on material you have not already memorised. Method books for building reading practice.
Kit, MIDI and gear
- MIDI
The protocol an electronic kit uses to report every strike as a digital message — which pad, how hard, and when — instead of sending audio. Everything measurable follows from those three fields, and so does everything unmeasurable: grip, stick height and posture send no message.
- MIDI note number
The value inside a MIDI message identifying which drum or cymbal was struck. There is a standard mapping and a great many kits that depart from it, including kits from the same brand, so mapping is learned and remembered per device.
- USB-MIDI / class-compliant
USB-MIDI carries the same strike data as traditional MIDI over a USB cable. “Class-compliant” is a property of the module, not the cable: the operating system needs no driver for it, which matters on an iPad, where installing one is not an option. Which kits are supported.
- Drum module
The brain of an electronic kit: the unit that reads every pad, cymbal and pedal, turns them into sound, and sends them out as MIDI. Most of what gets blamed on a practice app lives here — pad sensitivity, crosstalk, hi-hat calibration, the velocity curve.
- Trigger
The sensor inside a pad, cymbal or head that turns a physical strike into an electrical signal. A trigger firing twice from one stroke is a hardware fault, not a timing error: a second hit on the same drum within 30 ms of a matched one is absorbed as that echo.
- Mesh head
A drum head made of woven mesh rather than a solid playing surface, used on most electronic pads because it is quiet and rebounds predictably. Quiet at the head, though: the kick beater and the hi-hat pedal are what travel through a floor. Practising quietly without losing feel.
- Hi-hat controller
The pedal and sensor reporting how far a hi-hat is open or closed, so the module can pick the right open, closed or foot-splash sound. It is set up on the module and nowhere else, so a hat that will not close is a calibration job. Calibrating a hi-hat pedal.
- Latency
The delay between a physical strike and the sound reaching a player’s ears. It does not corrupt a timing score, because scoring uses the hardware timestamp each MIDI message arrives with, stamped as it reaches your device rather than when the app reads it. It does corrupt playing: a delayed monitor path teaches you to play early. Where latency actually comes from.
- Monitoring
How a player hears their own kit: headphones, an amp, or speakers. Wired is the safe choice. Bluetooth adds 100 ms or more of delay, and the amount drifts, so you spend the session correcting for a moving target. Choosing headphones for electronic drums.
