Internal pulse: keeping time when the click stops

Your internal pulse is whether the tempo holds when nothing is holding it for you. A click can carry a player who has no internal time at all — they are reacting to it, not keeping it.
The only way to find out which you are is to take the click away mid-take and see where you are when it comes back.

What is actually going on
There is a real difference between following a pulse and having one. Following is reactive: you hear the click and place your note next to it, correcting continuously. It produces good-looking timing numbers and no internal clock.
Having a pulse means the tempo is running in your head, and the click is just confirmation. The gap between the two is invisible while the click is on. It becomes obvious about four bars after it stops.
This is also why practising exclusively with a click can quietly stall you — you can log hundreds of hours of reactive playing without ever building the thing that makes playing with other musicians work.
The drill: The drop-out test
- Set a click at a comfortable tempo and play a groove you know well for four bars.
- Mute the click for four bars while you keep playing. Do not speed up to get back to it — hold what you have.
- Bring the click back for two bars. The gap between where you are and where it is, is your answer.
- Repeat, extending the silent section to eight bars, then sixteen.
- Count out loud during the silent bars at first. Then stop counting out loud and keep counting internally. That progression is the actual skill.
Target. Eight silent bars with the click landing back where you expect it — no audible jump when it returns, and no drift in either direction.
How iQuantize measures it
iQuantize scores this as a separate skill from ordinary click timing. Certain grooves in the library are authored with the click dropping out for a section and coming back for recovery; on those, the app scores the click-on bars and the click-off bars separately.
- Timing with the click comes from the bars where the click was running.
- Internal pulse comes from the bars where it was not. Your timing through the silence is your internal pulse — there is nothing else it could be.
The count-in always sounds, so you get an anchor to find the tempo before the body starts. And the app needs at least two complete silent bars before it will report a number: one bar is not evidence of anything.
A large gap between your two timing scores is the finding. Strong with the click and weak without it means you have been practising reaction rather than time — and it is very trainable once you can see it.

Common questions
Can I test this on any groove?
The scored version needs a groove that is written with a click-drop section, so the app knows which bars to judge. You can absolutely do the drill manually on any groove — you just have to assess it by ear.
How long should the silent section be?
Start at four bars. Four is long enough to expose drift and short enough that you can recover. Sixteen bars is a genuinely hard test.
