Fixing delay between hitting a pad and hearing it
Updated 24 July 2026
It is almost always Bluetooth. Wireless headphones and speakers add 100 ms or more, which makes tight drumming impossible. Switch to wired monitoring.
The fastest option of all is to monitor your own kit through the drum module's headphone output — that path is instant — while the app plays the backing chart.
The fix, step by step
- Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or speakers. This fixes the overwhelming majority of cases on its own.
- Use wired headphones or wired speakers on your device.
- Or monitor through the drum module's headphone output, which has no delay, and let the app play the chart.
- On an iPad, use a powered hub if you need the module and wired headphones at once.
Does latency affect my scores?
Monitoring delay is what you hear; it is separate from what the app measures. iQuantize timestamps incoming MIDI from the hardware rather than from when it got round to processing it, and it applies a measured timing correction only when the audio path has been calibrated confidently.
The practical consequence is that the app avoids telling you that you are ahead of or behind the click unless it is confident the measurement supports that. When it is not confident, the feedback stays at a level it can stand behind.
That said, playing against delayed monitoring will genuinely make you play worse. Fix the monitoring first — the numbers follow.
Practice with feedback that tells you what to fix
iQuantize scores every take against the chart, names what slipped, and picks the next groove for your level.
Requires an electronic drum kit or a MIDI-capable drum module.
Common questions
Why does Bluetooth add so much delay?
Wireless audio buffers and compresses the signal before sending it. Even the fastest codecs land well above the few milliseconds that tight drumming needs. It is a property of the transport, not of your headphones.
Are AirPods good enough?
No, not for drumming to a click. They are fine for listening back to a recording but not for playing in time.
My pads sometimes fire twice instead.
That is a different problem — see double triggering.
