Ghost notes that stay ghosts

A ghost note's job is to be felt and not heard. The common failure is not missing them — it is playing them too loud, so the groove turns into a flat wall of sixteenths with no backbeat.

The fix is not “play quieter”. It is building a repeatable stroke height for soft notes that survives being surrounded by loud ones.

What is actually going on

Dynamics are stroke height, not effort. A ghost note is a low stick that never rises far from the head; an accent is a high stick. When ghosts creep up it is nearly always because the stick never came back down after the accent — the height is carrying over instead of resetting.

That is why ghost notes fall apart specifically next to accents, and why practising them in isolation does not transfer. The skill is the transition.

There is also a hardware floor. A pad has a minimum velocity below which nothing is sent at all, so a genuinely inaudible ghost note simply does not exist as far as the app is concerned. The drill: Three heights, one bar

  1. Set the click slow — 70 BPM, sounding eighths.
  2. Play sixteenths on the snare with one fixed rule: beat 2 and 4 are accents, everything else is a ghost. Nothing in between.
  3. Watch your sticks, not your hands. The ghost stick should stay within a couple of centimetres of the head; the accent comes from height, not from squeezing.
  4. After every accent, consciously drop the stick back down before the next ghost. That reset is the entire drill.
  5. Once it is stable, add the kick on 1 and 3 — it will get worse, and that is the point.
What good looks like

Target. One minute of unbroken sixteenths where every ghost lands in the soft zone and every accent lands in the loud zone, with no ghost drifting up into the middle.

How iQuantize measures it

iQuantize reads the velocity of every hit and sorts it into three zones — ghost, normal, accent — then compares it to what the chart actually asked for. Two separate scores come out of that:

  • Dynamic control asks whether each note landed in the zone it was supposed to. Landing one zone away costs you half; landing two zones away — a ghost played as an accent — costs the full note.
  • Dynamic range asks whether there is real separation between your zones at all. It compares your typical ghost, normal and accent levels against each other, so a take that is technically consistent but uniformly flat scores poorly here even when control looks fine.

Those two failing together means everything is the same volume. Control failing while range holds up means you have the dynamics but are putting them in the wrong places — a completely different problem, and a much easier one.

The app only scores dynamics on charts that actually ask for them. A groove with no authored dynamic intent reports nothing rather than inventing a number from accidental velocity spread.

Common questions

How quiet should a ghost note be?

Roughly a third of your backbeat, as a starting point. What matters more than the absolute level is that there is an unmistakable gap between it and your normal hits.

My module does not register my quietest hits.

Raise that pad's sensitivity on the module. Do not solve it by hitting harder — that defeats the purpose.
