A MIDI drum trainer that maps your kit and reads every note

Plug your drum module into an iPhone, iPad or Mac over USB. iQuantize recognizes it, applies the right pad map, and starts reading every note you play — which pad, how hard, and exactly when.

No driver, no pairing, no configuration. For six brands the pad layout is applied before you play a note; for anything else, learn mode takes about a minute.

Connecting a kit

  1. Find your module's USB port — usually a square USB-B socket marked “TO HOST” or “USB COMPUTER”.
  2. Run a data cable to your Mac, USB-C iPad or iPhone. A charge-only cable fits and passes nothing, which is the most common failure.
  3. On a Lightning iPad, use a powered Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter — why it is required.
  4. Open iQuantize. The module is detected automatically and its pad map applied.
  5. Play a few pads to confirm. Anything wrong is a few seconds in Settings → MIDI → Pad MIDI Mapper.
When it is not sure If the detected map is only a close match rather than an exact one, the app asks before applying it instead of guessing. Silently applying a wrong layout is a far worse failure than one extra tap.

What happens to the MIDI

Each note is matched against the chart you are playing. From that comparison the app derives note accuracy, timing against the grid, timing consistency, dynamic zone correctness, and the balance between hands and feet.

Duplicate notes arriving within a few milliseconds on the same pad are discarded — that is the electrical double-trigger signature, and the window is far shorter than any real playing could produce. It cannot swallow a note you actually played. More on double triggering.

Vendor quirks are handled at the mapping layer: half-open hi-hat notes, pedal splashes, cymbal edges and cups, tom rims. Where a module sends open and closed hi-hat on the same note and separates them only by pedal position, the app reads the pedal controller for that module specifically.

Common questions

Do I need a MIDI interface?

Usually not. Most drum modules are class-compliant USB-MIDI devices, so a data cable straight to your device is enough. A separate MIDI interface is only needed for a module that has DIN MIDI ports but no USB.

What if my kit is not recognized?

Then learn mode maps it: select a drum on screen, hit the pad that should play it, save. It takes about a minute and the mapping is remembered for that module.

Does it work with a MIDI keyboard or pad controller?

It will receive the notes, but the app is built around drum-kit voices and drum notation. A pad controller mapped to kit voices works; a piano keyboard is not what it is for.

Can I use two kits?

Yes. Mappings are stored per module, so each kit keeps its own layout and gets it back automatically on reconnect.
