How to practise with a metronome: the three stages nearly everyone skips

A metronome does not give you time. It reveals whether you have any. Played against constantly, it can hide a missing pulse for years: you hear the click, place your note beside it, and never build the clock underneath.

Using one properly runs in three stages. Count it, subdivide it, then take it away. Almost everyone lives permanently in the middle one.

  • The click feels like something you chase rather than something you are with.
  • You have never counted a pattern out loud while playing it.

If two or three of those sound familiar, you are in the right place. Here is what is behind it, and what to do about it.

What is actually going on

Playing to a click runs a correction loop: hear the click, hear your note, adjust. That loop produces respectable timing numbers and no internal clock at all, which is why everything falls over the moment the reference disappears.

Counting out loud breaks the loop, because you become the reference. If you cannot say “one-e-and-a” while playing the bar, the pattern is not yours yet, and a click on top only hides that.

A quarter-note click also says nothing about where your sixteenths went. Four checkpoints a bar leaves a lot of room to be wrong in between, which is where rushing lives.

The drill: Count, subdivide, remove

  1. Stage one — count it, no click. Take a groove you can already play and say the subdivision out loud, “one-e-and-a, two-e-and-a”, as you play. If the counting stops at the fill, that is your finding.
  2. Stage two — click on the subdivision. Set 76 BPM sounding eighths, not quarters. Twice the checkpoints, half the room to hide. Two minutes.
  3. Push to sixteenths for a minute, then back to quarters at the same tempo. Quarters will suddenly feel wide and exposed: same tempo, less help.
  4. Stage three — take it away. Four bars with the click, four muted, four back. Do not surge to catch it when it returns; hold what you have.
  5. Extend the silence to eight bars, then sixteen. Once that is steady, stop counting out loud and count internally. Most players stop at the first ugly silent bar; the ugly ones are the work.
What good looks like

Target. Eight silent bars at 88 BPM where the click lands back exactly where you expected it — no audible jump in either direction when it returns.

How iQuantize measures it

Stage two is easy to measure. Stage three is the one that matters, so iQuantize keeps them apart:

  • Timing with the click — how close each hit sits to the grid while the click is running. That is what stage two trains.
  • Timing stability — how tightly your hits cluster around your own average, independent of being early or late.
  • Internal pulse — scored only on grooves authored with a click-drop section. The app mutes the click mid-take and scores those bars separately, and needs at least two complete silent bars before it reports anything. Strong with the click and weak without it means you trained reaction rather than time; internal pulse covers that.

On any other groove the drill still works; you judge it by ear. Where the chart does have click-drop bars, the result arrives as a sentence: Keep counting after the click drops — “Bars 9–12 start steady, then drift once the click is gone.” Underneath it, one button: Practice bars 9–12. A groove with no silent section says Internal pulse was not tested and leaves the space empty.

If you teach, those are the bars you cannot check. Inside a lesson you hear a student’s time well enough, but you are in the room — your count, your foot, your presence hold them up. What happened on Wednesday night with nothing underneath them is the part you take on trust. Nothing is sent to you and there is no dashboard: the student opens the result on their own device and you read bars 9 to 12 together. That takes a minute; working it out by ear takes ten.

Common questions

Should the click be on quarters or eighths?

Eighths while you diagnose, quarters once it is clean. A denser click gives more checkpoints; a sparser one is the harder test.

Does a metronome ruin your feel?

Practising only with one can. A click cannot teach push and pull, but it will tell you whether your drift is a choice or an accident.

How slow should I start?

Slow enough to count out loud and play at the same time, usually 60 to 80 BPM. If the counting breaks, the tempo is too high, which is the whole argument for practising slow to earn speed.
