Quiet practice: how quiet an e-kit really is

An electronic kit is quieter. It is not quiet. The pads are the easy part. What reaches the flat below is the kick beater and the pedal boards hammering the floor — low, structure-borne, and unbothered by a rug.
Fix the floor first and your playing last. Playing softly costs you something real: your dynamics.

What is actually going on
Two noises leave your kit and they want opposite fixes. Airborne noise is stick on mesh or rubber: a dry click that carries through a door and dies in a wall. Under it, on every eighth note, is the hi-hat pedal — a flat clack with a spring behind it — and the rubber cymbal pads, whose bright tick has a plastic ring after it. The kick beater and both pedal boards drive into the joists, and downstairs that is not really a sound: it is a knock felt through the floor, and it is the one people complain about.
Which is why a rug does nothing. Keeping low frequency out of a floor needs mass on a springy layer: 18 mm plywood or a paving slab, on dense foam or tennis balls, with everything that touches the ground on top. The mass blocks, the soft layer decouples.
Mesh heads and quieter cymbal pads are real reductions with a cost: loose mesh rebounds nothing like a drum head, and below a certain tension it stops registering your softest hits. A large drop. Not silence.
The drill: The quiet audit
- Record the problem before you solve it. Leave a phone on the floor of the room below and play a groove for one minute at your normal level.
- Now play kick alone — quarter notes, thirty seconds. If that clip is nearly as loud as the first, your problem is the floor.
- Build the riser before you change your playing. Plywood or a slab on foam or tennis balls, kit and pedals on top.
- Then soften the attack: a felt beater instead of plastic, spring tension down a notch, mesh no tighter than it has to be to trigger your ghost notes.
- Record again and compare. Then raise your throne — the riser moved you 50 mm up and took your pedal angles with it.
Target. A kick-only clip from next door that is clearly quieter than the first, and a scored take afterwards whose dynamic range has not dropped.
How iQuantize measures it
Quiet practice has one real cost, and it is measurable. Trying not to annoy the house pushes most people into a narrow, polite band: accents stop being accents and ghost notes climb up to meet them.
- Dynamic range compares your ghost, normal and accent levels against each other, so it falls when a take flattens out even if every note was in time. Dynamic range is the drill.
- Dynamic control asks whether each note landed in the zone the chart asked for. Politeness costs range first and control second.
Watch note accuracy too. Detune the mesh far enough and your softest hits stop crossing the pad’s trigger threshold, and a note that was never sent counts as missed. That arrives as Fix the hi-hat part. Most missed hits came from the hi-hat: 7 missed, concentrated around bars 5–6. Raise that pad’s sensitivity on the module rather than hitting harder, as with ghost notes.
Then decide what the quiet is worth. An hour a day at half stroke height teaches your hands a dynamic range you do not want.

Common questions
How quiet is a low-volume setup, really?
Roughly: an acoustic kit runs past 100 dB in the room, a mesh kit with headphones on sits nearer 70 — about a loud television. Quiet enough to share a house with; not quiet enough for a neighbour under a bare floor, because the kick goes through the structure, not the air.
Can I use Bluetooth headphones so nobody hears anything?
No. Wireless adds a delay that drifts, so your monitoring and any scored take are both meaningless. Use the module’s headphone output or wired monitoring; the latency chain explains why drift matters more than delay.
Does a low-volume acoustic kit work with the app?
Mesh heads and perforated cymbals on an acoustic kit are far quieter than brass, but still acoustic. iQuantize reads MIDI, so that rig is scored only with triggers and a module that sends it; check compatibility for your brand.
